Korea: Coupang Maintains Top Position in Mobile Commerce for 27 Months

“We have provided shopping experiences customized in the mobile environment to our customers by meeting the needs of the customers who want to enjoy shopping whenever and wherever.”

According to market researcher Neilsen Korean Click, Coupang has maintained its top position in the Korean e-commerce industry since July 2012 through September 2014 in terms of the number of mobile app users. As of September 2014, the number of mobile app users choosing Coupang was 6.14 million, beating the second and third players by 870,000 and 1.76 million.

The growth of the Korean mobile shopping market has been explosive. Statistics Korea said in a report on Oct. 31 that mobile shopping transaction amount in the third quarter of this year reached 3 trillion and 883 billion won, rising by over 100 percent year-on-year for three consecutive quarters. The mobile shopping is driving the growth of the Korean e-commerce market.

Coupang is the first company in the e-commerce industry to apply the specialized mobile commerce services, and it has been leading the trends of the e-commerce industry in Korea.

The company introduced the flicking service for the first time in the Korean mobile shopping industry. The service enables the users to sweep a mobile screen like book pages and to easily find out the information of various products. Coupang has used its expertise to develop the services customized to each user.

In addition, Coupang is the first in the industry to launch the “Easy Option Selection” service. When users click a picture of one product among a number of product options, the screen is directly linked to another screen that contains the detailed product information. Therefore, the users don’t need to go through all the product options in order to look at the detailed product information. So, the customers of Coupang can enjoy shopping on a small screen of mobile devices.
