China’s Singles Day is well behind us at this point, but its American analog, Cyber Monday, just happened earlier this week. China’s online shopping spree brought in more money – there was little doubt of that – but according to Sina Tech, it was also way more mobile:
Mobile ecommerce is growing in the US too, and this year’s Cyber Monday mobile numbers were up compared to last year, but they’re still nothing compared to China’s. As is evident in the chart above, Chinese Pinterest clone Mogujie had the strongest mobile showing, but two of the country’s biggest ecommerce companies – Alibaba and JD – also put up impressive mobile numbers.
That shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise; broadband penetration is relatively low in China compared to smartphone penetration. A government report from earlier this fall revealed that the country has 1.27 billion mobile users, compared to just 200 million broadband users.
