Jetblue is the first US airline to adopt Apple Pay. Passengers can now pay for food and other premium items using Apple Pay. The airline is handing out iPad minis, fitted with NFC enabled covers, to around 3500 crew members to carry out the Apple Pay option. These iPads will have a custom Inflight Service Assistant app installed. Using this app, crew members can get quick access to flight data and passenger information.
The rollout of Apple Pay for in-flight purchases is expected to be completed by June this year. This can be deemed as good move by the airline which will inspire others to follow suit. In case of JetBlue, the Apple Pay service would initially be available on transcontinental flights between New York’s JFK and San Francisco and Los Angeles airports.
JetBlue is further poised to integrate Apple Pay into its own mobile app later this year.
